Sometimes the experience of looking at a painting can transport you to a different time and place. And while most canvases are grounded in reality, artist Aaron Long prefers to create compositions that ignite the imagination. His series of carefully rendered oil paintings depict distant locations inspired by the fantasy genre.

From haunting blue cities illuminated by the night sky to pristine forest environments, the artist traverses an array of different destinations, each of which appears fully formed in her paintings. Long uses traditional techniques to portray fantastical places as realistically as sites that exist in real life. Whether it’s foreign architecture or a new mountain range, he faithfully adapts these original concepts as he sees them in his mind.

Based in Missouri, Long has been painting since 2013. “I discovered my love of painting through online tutorials like Bob Ross and Kevin Hill,” he told My Modern Met. “I also discovered my love for fan art when I tried to recreate [scenes and places] from the Lord of the Rings and Skyrim in my landscape paintings. Most of his work is based on fictional locations from video games, books, and TV shows.

You can purchase original artwork and prints through Long’s Etsy shop and keep up to date with his latest projects by following the artist on Instagram.

From grassy fields to turbulent clouds, landscapes are made up of many textures. British-Canadian artist Georgia Hart illustrates the layered beauty of the horizon in her striking impasto oil paintings. She exclusively uses palette knives to render the many shapes on paper.

“The thick peaks of paint incorporate another layer into my work, contrasting with the delicate, immaculate oil paper that deliberately frames bold and often rugged scenes,” she tells My Modern Met. “These 3D qualities allow the work to be more than a landscape painting: aiming to evoke intense emotion while serving as a window into a place that is both familiar and distant.”

Hart’s ties to Canada and England are evident in her subject matter, as she often depicts the rugged mountain peaks of Canada as well as the pristine beaches of Cornwall in southwest England. Each piece seems to capture a distinct moment in time, in which clouds rush across the sky and light hits the landscape below in a specific way. “I use painting as a way to explore changes in landscapes: considering how perspective, time and the seasons can create an uncontrollable and fleeting mood. Palette knives add an expressive touch to my representational work .

German artist Kate Waters celebrates the unexpected beauty of the mundane in her realistic oil paintings. From indoor scenes of people seated at tables to nighttime depictions of car-lined streets, she captures moments of modern life that are familiar to everyone, but rarely immortalized on canvas. His latest exhibition titled Apotheosis of the Real illustrates this fascination with a series of paintings inspired by low-key urban life.

Originally from Canada, Waters moved to Düsseldorf, Germany after graduating from art school in 1991, and has lived there ever since. “My main source of visual inspiration comes from my own photographs which I mostly rework in Photoshop or collage to achieve the final composition,” Water explains in an artist statement. “My other source of inspiration for content is everything that exists, really. I’m fascinated by the seeming serendipity of cross-references within cultures, in advertising, literature, music tracks, history, art history, in words, fashion, social policy, religion Realizing this turns everything into a kind of poetry, which it is indeed, our absurd world/humanity is resolutely turned towards the self-harm, it’s so interesting and beautiful and I’m a part of it.

Each of these figurative paintings focuses on a distinct moment in time that is neither extraordinary nor boring. Some of these works feature figures looking directly at the viewer, while other images offer a more voyeuristic view of people’s lives. All pieces, however, are rendered with a masterful sense of precision and attention to detail. “My image choice, which I then invest the next four to six weeks in, is governed by finding something that has universal meaning, something that looks familiar to many, perhaps a tick‚ pre- Klischee‚ a metaphor”, she continues. “The content I want to extract from an image matures as I work on it.”

Apotheosis of the Real is on display at Galerie Voss in Düsseldorf from August 27 to October 23, 2021. You can follow the artist on Instagram for updates on his latest projects and exhibitions.

Everyone loves to receive a bouquet of fresh flowers, but how often do we pay attention to their smallest details? Ukrainian artist Ira Volkova facilitates the study of delicate petal structures in her massive floral oil paintings. She captures a variety of pastel-colored flowers with masterful precision.

Based in Kyiv, Volkova received formal training in painting at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv. Since then she has developed her professional practice creating large scale representations of beautiful flowers. These paintings usually feature a couple of flowers dressed in delicate, sweet hues and set against an abstract background that emphasizes their fragility. “Each of my paintings is ideal,” says Volkova.

Volkova also uses flowers in expressive portraits. She combines her expertise in rendering plant life with realistic human figures, placing the flowers in front of the person’s face. This both obscures the sitter’s identity and envelops her in an alluring natural mystique.

The ocean is a muse for many water-loving artists. The challenge, however, is to capture its movement. Californian designer Andreea Berindei does just that by rendering the different states of the ocean in realistic acrylic paintings.

From crashing waves to a slow rising tide, she explores a unique experience in each canvas, using her masterful skills to make the water as realistic as possible. But if Berindei excels in the painting of water, his relationship to reality is much more delicate. “What not many people know is that I struggle with thalassophobia, the fear of large bodies of water,” Berindei told My Modern Met.

“As a painter of water, I’m amazed that I don’t experience the chilling state of mind that this body of work could trigger,” she shares. “But my water painting process differs because even though I struggle with thalassophobia, it somehow helps me get the base coats of the deepest shades of blue, going up with the shades and nuances that build them, adding glints of delicate detail and movement with every stroke.” Berindei enhances his vivid depictions of the ocean by juxtaposing them with equally vivid and ethereal skies. As a result, she captures the whole atmosphere of being at the beach.

“We all have gifts hidden underneath, waiting to be discovered and developed,” adds the artist. “But until we take the time to ask ourselves why we were put on this Earth, these gifts lie dormant. It depends on us. When you choose to discover your gifts, you are in a unique place. You are about to discover what you were born to do, what you are or will be passionate about doing.

Looking at one of the Ksenya Verse paintings is a good reminder to look up at the sky more often. The Arizona-based artist captures the nebulous shapes of clouds and their many colors in her exquisite oil paintings.

Originally from Russia, Verse moved to Arizona at the age of 19 to “expand his visual and cultural outlook”. There, she fell in love with the striking landscape of the American Southwest, finding a special fascination with unbroken horizons, dramatic cloud formations and shimmering bodies of water. “My work is about the innate connection between the outer sky and our inner emotions,” she explains on her website.

Verse creates its mutable clouds by layering different colors in soft, rounded shapes, and emphasizing light and shadow. This connection to the sun and how it affects the appearance of clouds is what brings amorphous forms to life. Additionally, the artist uses composition to accentuate the size of his cloud formations by filling most of the space with the sky and leaving the landscape as a thin band across the bottom of the panel.

There are a myriad of unique creatures living deep under water and between blades of grass. Self-taught artist based in Los Angeles Robert Steven Connett explores the diversity of these less visible ecosystems in her vibrant acrylic paintings. From plankton and jellyfish to praying mantises and rhinoceros beetles, each colorful image is filled with dozens of carefully rendered life forms.

Connett finds endless inspiration in the beauty of “the flora and fauna of the natural world, especially those of oceanic origin.” Although some viewers believe his work is digitally painted, the artist actually produces each piece using traditional methods. For this reason, some of his more complex compositions can take upwards of 2,000 hours.

The kaleidoscopic mix of colors and the many fine details recall the beauty of scientific illustrations. Many of the creatures depicted would not normally be visible without the use of a microscope, but Connett’s images magnify their appearance so viewers can admire every part of them. Likewise, the cluttered arrangement of creatures and plants imbues the images with a bubbly energy that is a delight to watch.

Cape Town-based artist Sasha Hartslief doesn’t have to travel far to find creative inspiration. Her series of atmospheric oil paintings reveal the understated beauty of routine, ordinary objects, and days spent at home. The key to creating the mood in his paintings lies in the light. “People, scenes and objects cannot be seen without the element of light, but a scene painted in direct sunlight will convey to the viewer a completely different feeling than the same scene lit by candlelight,” she said. told My Modern Met. “Light is a subtle language that we all perceive intuitively, and our whole sense of the world is dictated by the quality of light.”

Many of his works feature bold, expressive brushstrokes and a soft color palette. This slightly impressionistic style serves to capture the transience of a specific moment or mood. “I am drawn to painting light at lost and forgotten times of day,” says Hartslief. “Capturing the contrast between the white wall in the evening and the elusive warmth escaping from a window, to portray the almost tactile sense of edges that are lost in shadow and emerge sharply in light.”

Hartslief has worked as a professional artist for almost 20 years and has exhibited her art in her native South Africa as well as in Europe. She mainly works in the all the prima method (also called wet on wet), which allows him to produce paintings in one or two days. “Once the paint starts to dry, I consider the painting finished, so for me a painting is always a race against time,” she continues. “I try to express my intention and understanding of the subject in the simplest and most economical way, despite its level of complexity.”

british artist Jason Anderson paints pixelated cityscapes by applying geometric shades of color to the canvas with a palette knife. These distorted views of urban environments capture the striking forms of skyscrapers, houses and bridges in a rainbow of pastel hues. As a result, each canvas vibrates with a rigid yet equally dynamic feel.

Anderson developed this unique approach to painting after working as a stained glass apprentice. During this time, he learned to simplify the subject into “puzzles” of colored sections. This experience then continued in his practice of painting, where the artist divides the different elements into a composition with individual blocks of hues. He uses the palette knife to create a distinct division between all the chromatic parts. “I’m fascinated by color,” says Anderson, “and I work with a strong palette to create deep impasto effects with paint.”

From a distance, Anderson’s paintings achieve a sort of impressionistic image of the horizon. But the closer you look at the works, the more abstract they become. “This approach creates a painting that, like the landscape, is constantly changing. So as you move around the room and the ridges of paint catch the light, there’s always something new to see,” he continues. This arrangement of vibrant shapes creates a visible harmony that stimulates the eye as it scans the canvas. Every city vibrates with beats of movement, light and color.

In his series of abstract paintings, the artist Philip Barlow conveys the fleeting moments often seen through blurry camera lenses. This common photographic phenomenon called the bokeh The effect simplifies the background and subjects into colorful light blurs. Although bokeh can be seen as undesirable in photos, Barlow uses the geometric style in his paintings as a way to “capture ‘the moment,’ a millisecond in time when everything lines up perfectly”.

Barlow’s bokeh effect paintings emphasize color and harmony over crisp, clear detail. Cityscapes at night are reduced to blocks of light, while human subjects become anonymous, barely recognizable silhouettes. In doing so, the viewer is immersed in an ephemeral moment that is both mysterious and familiar.

Barlow says in his artist statement that his paintings “give us a glimpse of the time when form, light and color come together in their complexity”. These transitory moments are heightened by his intentional abstraction. The colors of car lights, signs, shops and restaurants suddenly become magical ornaments on the canvas. Together they reflect the essence of space in this case.
