SPARC Gallery presents: ‘Incognition’ | Abstract paintings by David Shannon | South Pasadenan
The opening reception for “Incognition”, an exhibition featuring a series of abstract oil paintings by award-winning artist/author/illustrator David Shannon, presented by the South Pasadena Arts Council (SPARC), will be held on Saturday, January 18, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the SPARC Chamber Gallery in South Pasadena.
David Shannon is perhaps best known for the dozens of acclaimed books he has written and/or illustrated over the past three decades to the delight of countless children, but this Caldecott Honor recipient wear other creative hats. A graduate of the ArtCenter College of Design with a BFA in illustration, Shannon began his career in editorial illustration. His art has appeared in such major publications as Time, Newsweek, rolling stone, and the New York Times.
And, for several years, Shannon has been working on a series of abstract oil paintings that explore “the increasingly irrational nature of contemporary culture,” Shannon said in her artist statement. “Ambiguity, formal disquiet and multiple interpretations reflect the challenges of making sense of today’s world.” Organized by Richard Blue Trimarchi of Works of art Art editions, “Incognition” marks Shannon’s first solo exhibition featuring these thought-provoking works.
(On February 15, 2020, during the free Winter Arts Crawl in South Pasadena, SPARC will host a reading and book signing with Shannon celebrating her latest children’s book, “Mr. Nogginbody gets a hammer”, published by Norton Young Readers. Time/place to come.)
